How to start farming with a fence in Black Desert

When it comes to the farming life skill in Black Desert you will require a fence. You can have up to 10 fences rented at once, you can also mix and match the types of fences you have, for example, 7 small fences and 3 plain fences.

If the fences are inactive for roughly 13 days, then the fences will be returned to a nearby town/city storage.

How to Renting a fence in Black Desert

Renting a fence is fairly simple, you just need to find the correct NPC that you can rent a fence, the Material NPC, which can be found in towns/cities.

There are four different types of fences in Black Desert that you can rent, that cost different amounts of Contribution Points. If you chose to return the fences, you will receive your contribution points back.

Placing a fence

Fences can be placed in the open world in Black Desert. Once you have chosen your plot of land, right-click the fence in your inventory and place.

Different crops require different temperature, humidity, and groundwater. So if you are focusing on one specific crop then maybe it is worth looking for the best place for that farm to be placed on the map.

However, if you are unsure or just starting out, Heidel, Velia, and Calpheon are good hot spots for most players to place their farms.

Once you have placed your fence, you will now be able to view it on your map and will change colour depending on if it requires tending to and harvesting.

How to get seeds and animals in Black Desert

There are a couple of different methods for obtaining seeds, keep in mind that there are different qualities of seeds and animal food which will impact how many materials you will get in return.

For animals on the other hand, this can be obtained from the processing window.

Chicken Feed can be obtained from grinding barley.

Haystacks can be obtained from drying grass

The only type of seed that cannot be obtained from these methods are Magical SeedsMagical Seeds can only be obtained from plant breeding

Planting

When it comes to planting your seeds and animals on your farm, head to the center of your farm and select ‘Place Mode‘.

This will bring up a farming UI, in the top left of the UI, you have Crop Management. This shows how many slots have been used on your farm.

Usually, it is 1 seed = 1 slot. However Magical seeds take up to 5 slots. This is also different for haystacks and chicken feed.

On the right side of the UI, this will show all of your seeds and animal feed that you can place on your farm.

Harvesting

When it is time to harvest your crops, this can be anytime after the crops have turned 100%, they can go up to 200% maximum.

Another thing you can do is plant breeding, this will not give you the yield from your crops but instead give you a chance to obtain multiple seeds, a higher quality of that seed, and also the farming byproduct.

The farming byproduct is called Blush Leaf. This item can be exchanged to Liana NPC in any major city, and also Camellia Loggia from Loggia Farm.

You can exchange 20 of the Blush Leaf item for the following:

  • Byproduct fertilize x4
  • Special Pepper Seed x4
  • Stonetail Fodder x1
  • 900 Contribution EXP + 30 Farming EXP

Fertilizer and Watering for farming

Once you have placed all of your crops down, you can then view the crop information, this will include the temperature, humidity, groundwater and fertilizer.

Fertilizer will speed up the growth of crops, fertilizer can be made from processing, or bought at the Central Market.

Fertilizer you can use:

  • Inorganic Fertilizer
  • Byproduct Fertilizer
  • Organic Fertilizer

How to craft fertilizer through processing

Watering your crops is more important than fertilizer, as if the moisture level drops to 0, this can cause the crop to rot and decrease the items you can obtain from the crop massively.

Water you can use:

To use this on your farm, simply place them on your hot-bar, walk to the center of your crops so all are in range and use the fertilizer and water.

Tip

Making the most out of your fertilizer and water is by not leaving any gaps between your farms.

Hugging your farms into fours works perfectly for making the most out of your resources because if you place all of your seeds to the center of the four farms and then when you go to fertilize and water your farms, go to the very center of the four farms.

The fertilizer and water will actually cover all four farms and all forty seeds.

When placing the seeds, aim to make them look like a pyramid just like the photo below, on all four farms.

Tending the farm

While your crops are growing, you can run into a few problems, such as birds and insects, which can also require pruning.

You will be able to view this on the map by your farm icon turning red. This means that your crops have stopped growing and require your assistance before they can continue to grow.

Simply go up to the crop that is affected and tend to them, usually this will be ‘prune‘ or ‘kill pests‘. This will give additional farming experience points and also a few items.

Workers with farming

Another thing you can do with your farms is use your hired workers to work on your farm for you, so every time they require tending to, your workers can get this done instead.

Giants are the best worker for farms as they have the most stamina and can keep attending to your farm while you are doing other things in Black Desert.

The only down sides to using workers is that you will not be getting any farming experience from tending to your farm.

Workers also cannot harvest your crops, or plant crops.

To set up workers on your farms, head to the garden UI, this will show your list of farms that are currently active. There is also a worker icon beside each farm where you can assign a worker to that garden to tend to it for you.
